Active Fluid System
How does it work? The system works not only by utilising the lubricating properties of the fluid, but by also utilising the 'flushing' properties of the oiler, enabling dirt and dust to be removed from the chain whilst riding. This is why the manual approach is in some respects better than a steady small drip rate.
How best to use it?
The best use of the oiler requires some tacit knowledge, taken from experience of using the device and listening to your chain - quite literally. You will hear when the chain is 'loaded' and when it is dry. It goes back to those phrases "a little and often" and "as required". You will get a feel for when it needs to be done. Putting the squid in a natural place for your hand to actuate helps too.
For maximum efficiency we would suggest squeezing 3 or 4 times every 10 miles. Each squeeze of the squid dispenses between 1 and 1.5ml of lubricant (dependant on whether you use a one or two fingered squeeze.) This would give 100 to 150 miles per reservoir. (@ 40ml) which relates to 300 to 450 miles per 125ml bottle.
(These figures are merely a guide however, and if riding on good roads and in good conditions, it is possible to use less lubricant.)
How do we know?
*It's all to do with chain efficiency under 'Boundary-Layer' lubrication conditions.
Water based lubricants are effective. They separate lightly loaded bearings, stopping them rubbing against each other. (If they rub, they cause friction, and waste pedal power.) Active Fluid is washed away in rain - slowly in light rain, rapidly in a downpour (unless salt gets at it, when it becomes insoluble.) During this rain however, it is the rainwater itself which is acting as a lubricant - however also exposing your chain to corrosion. When it's not raining, Active Fluid is the lubricant, separating bearings, lubricating the chain, and allowing you to utilise all the power as pedal power.
Similarly, after rain, Active Fluid injected into the chain inhibits rust, i.e. while the bicycle is in storage. Water will evaporate leaving Active Fluid concentrate as a thin protective film on the chain. The interstices inside the bearings also 'suck' the Active Fluid inside the chain under their capillarity.
