NASA WorldWind vs Google Maps

Ovde možete diskutovati o kartama, njihovom korišćenju, o načinima i opremi za orijentaciju u prirodi. Naravno, raspravama na temu GPS tehnike kao modernom načinu orijentacije je mesto ovde.

NASA WorldWind vs Google Maps

Post by pedja »

Evo zanimljive inforamcije u vezi ova dva projekta.
I haven't tried Google Earth, but I am involved with the
NASA World Wind project, so I can provide some information.

World Wind (WW), in general, will only use imagery that is
in the public domain. Google Earth (GE) can use the same imagery,
but in terms of satellite imagery is using the Keyhole imagery,
because Google purchased Keyhole. Google has approached NASA,
and wanted to buy the imagery that NASA produced for WW, but
initial talks didn't progress, because unlike Microsoft, who
made a "WW version" of Terraserver available, Goggle didn't
really offer anything to WW. However, NASA plans to resume
talking to Goggle to see if something can be worked out to
enable some of the imagery used in GE in WW.

There are already unsupported hacks to allow using Google's
imagery in WW, but people are also finding that Goggle is,
after a while, blocking their IP address temporarily. This
isn't necessarily a surprise, because NASA NLT, the originators
of WW, NASA JPL's OnEarth, and Microsoft's Terraserver have
in the past all had problems with server overloads due to
the volume of traffic generated by WW.

Both GE and WW are in development. WW is open source, and there
is an active development community outside of NASA. Inside NASA,
a new version of WW is under development, and will be available
later this summer. The main changes are internal, but they will
allow a different means of being able to program WW, which will
allow 3rd parties who want to offer additional functionality to
add it to WW. There are lots of "add-ons" available for WW, with
more being developed all the time. You can get an idea of some
of the types of things being developed here:

There is more satellite imagery that will be added to WW. NASA
is processing the same data that is used in the NASA Zulu MrSid
Landsat images that you can use in OziExplorer(The GeoCover images).
Work is underway to setup mirrors for the data used in WW, to
improve the response time around the world:

For more about NASA World Wind, visit the NASA website:
http://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/ but make sure to bookmark
the WorldWindCentral (WWC) website:

and check the Knowledge Base:

As for Will's comment that the GE imagery "resolution is
massively greater" than that available in WW, the real
situation is that it depends on your area of interest.
For example, one of the WW Community members is working
on processing some publicly available imagery of Fort
Collins Colorado with 6 inch resolution. Another person
is processing aerial photo imagery of New Zealand at
2.5 meter resolution and New York State at 0.3 and 0.15
meter resolution. Also, WW has a WMS browser built in,
so many mapping websites that support the WMS standard
can be used with WW.
